Considering Minecraft's popularity it's no surprise there are many people who are looking towards setting up their own Minecraft server. There are many ways to play Minecraft with your friends but the most versatile by far is setting up hosted Minecraft server that is online and available for players from all around the world.
Multiplayer modes in Minecraft
Minecraft can be played solo, however one of its main attractions is multiplayer mode that allows players to engage with each other. This can result in many things depending on the environment, good or bad.
Minecraft players can decide to wage war, run co-op quests, or simply co-exist in peace on their own little plots of virtual land. For Minecraft multiplayer mode, there are four main options;
- Playing on a Local Area Network (LAN)
- Minecraft Realms
- Split Screen
- Online Server
Playing on LAN is of course free but the players have to be in the same network, meaning you can only play with people within one household.
Minecraft Realms are servers that are not free and are hosted by Mojang, the creators of Minecraft.
Split Screen is another free but rather limited option.
Least but not last, online server. That's probably technically the hardest way to set up Minecraft server but it also allows operators the most control. For example on online servers you can customize game fully, anything from Mods to gameplay itself, that being said in most of cases you need good knowledge of at least Linux and Java.
